Wedding Catering Trends of 2017
By Roxana Oliver
With cooking and different cuisines getting more media attention, today’s couples care about their food and drink assortments more than ever. That means that standard wedding menus of chicken and beef just aren’t enough anymore. So, if you want your wedding to be unique and unforgettable when it comes to food, check out these new wedding catering trends that will rule the receptions in 2017 and leave your guests craving for more.
DIY: food edition
Instead of classic wedding menus, you can try something completely different. Have your guests take a more hands-on approach with their food and put together their own meals. Think Mimosa or Bubble Bars, or make-your-own taco or salad stations. This way there will be no unsatisfied guests!
A classic wedding cake is good, but being able to choose from a ton of different mini dessert is even better. Set up a table with a bunch of tasty treats and have your guests take their pick.
Time travel with food
This year, couples are taking their guests back through time with their food and drink choices. You can feast on bride’s and groom’s favourite childhood snacks, their comfort food choices or, to make things even more personal, meals they had on their first date or the day they got engaged. Very cute and intimate.
Many couples are deciding to go with a more relaxed approach to their reception and are skipping the traditional sit-down meals in favor of food trucks. Not only are they a more wallet-friendly option, but they usually serve food that’s easy to eat, so the party never has to stop. What’s more, you can get several trucks with different cuisines and satisfy every palate.
Organic local products are more popular than ever, so it’s not a surprise that you can see more and more of that farm-to-table approach in wedding menus as well. This will take some prepping since you’ll have to familiarize yourself with foods that will be in season for your wedding day and what the local specialties are. This is great because you’ll always have the freshest and the tastiest products on your menu.
Food and drink matching
Forget about presenting your guests with only two types of cocktails and food choices, and embrace the new trend of food and drink matching. Think cocktail hour with salsa and margaritas, pasta and wine, craft beer and short ribs. One of the hottest catering companies in NYC has taken this approach for their wedding gigs and, so far, people have simply gone crazy for it. This type of menu offers guests more options, plus it’s so much more fun than the simple wine+cheese story.
Alternative wedding cakes
You’ll be surprised how many people actually don’t like cake. This year, this will not be a problem at all. Forget about traditional wedding cakes and go for something you actually enjoy. Why not have a super cool alternative such as a cupcake or doughnut tower instead?
Late night snacks
Dancing all night can be a hungry work, and couples seem to finally get it. This year you can expect to get some late-night snacks or even a full breakfast if you stay until the early morning hours. There’s nothing better than some French fries and Coke to lift up your spirits and give you the energy needed to continue dancing. You can also go with pizza, popcorn, dumplings or espressos to keep people awake. Protip: place your late-night snack stations close to the dance floor, so your guests don’t even have to stop dancing.
As you can see, this year you can forget all about tradition when it comes to wedding catering. There are so many new (and much more fun) options you can surprise your guests with and leave them in awe. Be creative and bold enough to push boundaries of wedding catering, because after all, that’s what 2017 is all about.
